Outlander and North Carolina
BRAVE THE NEW WORLD
Regulators are mentioned in episodes 401, 'America the Beautiful' and 402, 'Do No Harm' of Season 4 of Outlander on STARZ. This blog provides a background on the Regulator Movement in North Carolina.
When Jamie and Claire arrive in North Carolina in June 1767 the Regulators were a loosely organized group of small hold farmers located in the backcountry counties of Anson, Rowan, Orange and Granville of North Carolina.
The name refers to their desire to regulate their own affairs. Individuals began protesting excessive fees, falsification of records and other abuses by appointed officials in 1764.
Petitions were submitted to the assembly asking for the recall of appointed officials abusing their power. When this failed the Regulator Association was formed in 1768. The members pledged to pay only legal taxes and fees.
The next post will contain information on Regulator activities and historical figures associated with the Regulator movement within the period covered in ‘Drums of Autumn’.
