Outlander and North Carolina
BRAVE THE NEW WORLD
The Regulators have been mentioned in Starz Outlander Season 4 episodes 401, 402, 404 and 405. In the first blog episode, What are the Regulators is discussed. In this episode Who Are the Regulators is reviewed.
The Regulators had no official leadership but several men were considered leaders of the movement. Of those, two are present in ‘The Drums of Autumn’ and ‘The Fiery Cross’. In ‘The Drums of Autumn’, Hermon Husband and James Hunter attend at a dinner at River Run where they have stopped on their way from Wilmington to their homes in the backcountry. Claire is seated next to Hermon Husband while James Hunter is across from her. During the dinner Hermon Husband notes he has enjoyed Jocasta’s hospitality on many occasions. Husband and Hunter, as well as many small hold farmers, had farms in Orange County (in what is now Alamance county). In ‘The Drums of Autumn’ Husband is described as “broad shouldered, gently smiling Quaker with a picturesque name.” and Hunter is described as “a tall, rawboned…”, “lantern-jawed individual, he was more plainly dressed than most of those in attendance, though not a Quaker. “
Hermon (Herman) Husband joined the Society of Friends (Quakers) in his early years in Pennsylvania and professed this faith during the rest of his life even though he was ousted from the faith. He was a reader, writer and was considered the chief spokesman for the movement. He held many positions in the colony of North Carolina in addition to farming. He served as assemblyman for Orange County in 1769 and 1770. He was jailed several times for his participation in the Regulator movement. At the time of the Regulator movement Husband had been widowed two times and was married to his third wife, Amy Allen. Prior to the Battle of Alamance Husband attempted to negotiate a truce with Tryon. He left the battle site before the fighting began. After the battle Tryon sent the militia into the backcountry to destroy property. Husbands property was one of many destroyed. He left North Carolina for Pennsylvania where he would later participate in The Whiskey Rebellion.
James Hunter was of Scotch-Irish ancestry. He is one of the many immigrants who moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. He was very active in the Regulator movement it is thought he helped to draft many of the Regulator petitions, his signature is found on most petitions and he was tasked with delivering petitions. After Husband fled the battle site he was asked to lead the Regulators into battle. He declined responding that "they were all free men and every one must command himself." This left the Regulator forces without a military leader. He was pardoned by Tryon and stayed in North Carolina even though Tryon’s forces destroyed his farm. He takes part in the Battle of Moore’s Creek as a Tory.
Another person important to the Regulator Movement and mentioned in ‘The Fiery Cross’ is Dr. David Caldwell, Presbyterian minister, educator, physician and statesman. SPOILER ALERT In the ‘Fiery Cross’ it is Dr Caldwell who performs Brianna and Roger’s marriage ceremony at the gathering at Mount Helicon. Merging history with fiction, Diana Gabaldon includes his role as peace envoy between the Regulators and Tryon at the Battle of Alamance.
The Battle of Alamance takes place in ‘The Fiery Cross’ which will be depicted in season 5 of Outlander. Posts covering information about the battle will be delivered at that time.
I will provide information on Regulator activities that take place during ‘The Drums of Autumn’ timeframe in the next post. Future posts will cover Governor William Tryon, Scots immigration to North Carolina and the native peoples of North Carolina..
